This is the divider the library was debating purchasing, they go for about $73 plus tax. They need four so it'd amount to around $292. Our librarian Ms. Ramsey asked if we could design some instead to cut down on the cost and make them more interesting looking.
My idea immediately was to include some type of quote so I had to do look for some quote ideas. I used https://www.goodreads.com/quotes/tag/knowledge which had an abundance of quotes to choose from. I narrowed it down to six ideas. I asked Ms. Ramsey to choose one that she liked the best because she would be the one with the desk closest to the dividers so it may as well have a quote she enjoyed.
Designing the Divider
I wanted a simple design so I needed to figure something out with the quote that I wanted and possibly another symbol. I had to start looking for designs I could do in addition to the quote.
The design ended up being this. It is simple and it has few components. One of the suggestions was that it should be simple and not distracting. I needed most of the divider to be engraved. So if I had just left the additional design off I would have too much white space.
Designing the Clamp
What I learned |
This was my first iteration the hole in the center ended up being way too big so I decided to get rid of it altogether. It also was too short to attach to the table and it wouldn't stay on at all
This was my second and final iteration. It was just the right size and it stayed fastened to the table really well. I ended up having to print another because just one wouldn't provide enough support. These are my clamps in action. It held the mock-divider up well and were very space efficient. Unfortunately my divider did not get lasered in time as I missed a full day of work. But when it is, I will add a photo to this page. |
I learned that you can't afford to miss one day of class as it screws up your entire schedule. I also learned that your first idea will not always work just the way you want it to. Also, you may have to put in time outside of class to finish the projects on time. It'll always take just a bit more work than you originally plan for to get something done. If I were to change anything, I wouldn't have gotten sick (obviously, who would choose to be sick?) and I would've started my prints faster, and made the clamps a little bit wider for more support.
